Use KAI (Kirton Adaptor Innovator Index) to assess the thinking styles among the 12 associated with this workgroup. Start the session with a lot of discussion, with the intent of getting to about 10 agreed upon communication guidelines for the team.
The workgroup appreciated a full day to talk through their similarities and differences in their approach to problems and communication. They found that they had more in common than they thought and they recognized the synergies and ways that they can help each other. The workgroup transformed into a team, with lots of energy for their new communication guidelines and newly discovered synergies. Even six months later they were commenting on how productive their workshop was.
